Time Out Market sits on the second floor of Maremàgnum, the shopping and leisure complex out on the water at Port Vell. It isn't a random collection of food stalls. Time Out's own editorial team selected the kitchens, which is the same model the brand runs in Lisbon, Miami and a handful of other cities: take some of a city's better chefs and restaurateurs, give them a stall each, and put them under one roof.

What you get in practice is a mix of sit-down counters, a few bars, and an outdoor terrace looking straight out over the harbour. It's louder and more casual than a restaurant, and considerably more comfortable than eating standing up on La Rambla with a plate balanced on your arm.

Maremàgnum is worth understanding on its own terms, because it explains why the Market is worth a special trip. Barcelona's shops are largely closed on Sundays and public holidays by law. Maremàgnum is the one shopping centre that keeps going regardless, which makes it the default answer whenever a visitor asks what's actually open on a Sunday.

That alone won't sell you on visiting. The building itself, and the marina it sits over, is part of the appeal. Come in the evening and the whole place lights up against the water, with the Gothic Quarter and Montjuïc visible across the harbour.

There's no entry fee and no need to book. Walk in, find a table or grab a spot at the terrace rail, and order from whichever stalls look good. It gets busy on weekend evenings, less so for a weekday lunch.
