In summer, sitting on the open top deck in the middle of the day can get uncomfortable quickly. The sun in Barcelona is serious and if you are not used to it, an hour on an exposed roof with no shade will take it out of you. Go in the morning or late afternoon if you can.

It is also worth to be clear about what the bus is and isn't. Passing the Sagrada Família from the upper deck and hearing two minutes of audio about it is not the same as going inside. The zoo, the aquarium, the parks, the stadiums, these are all places where the real experience happens on the ground, not from a moving bus. Use the hop on hop off as a first pass, a way of deciding where to go back to properly. Don't treat it as a substitute for actually going.
